All 32 teams have completed the group stage and 16 are preparing for the knockout phase. This is a short round-up of Groups E to H, of the results as they stand after three matches. Did your country qualify or fall at the first hurdle?

Group E

Italy finished top of the “Group of Death” by beating the Czech Republic 2-0 in their final match. Marco Materazzi broke the deadlock after 25 minutes and Filippo Inzaghi ensured victory four minutes from time for the 6/5 Italians.

Ghana also qualified for the knockout stage by beating the USA and thus ending the Czech Republic’s involvement in the tournament. Juninho put 1/4 Brazil in front after 52 minutes, Gilberto netted a third on 58 and Ronaldo scored his second with 10 minutes left.

Australia were unlikely qualifiers after the earned the draw they needed against Croatia. Sometimes we take things for granted, especially when it comes to performing the basic exercises that constitute the core of most bodybuilders’ training regimes.

It is useful, therefore, to describe in detail the processes involved in actually doing these exercises. This will help beginners to start out using the correct techniques before moving on to potentially more dangerous heavy weights. If it also helps more experienced lifters to redress some of the little faults that have almost imperceptibly crept in over the years, all the better.

In this article we’ll take a close look at dumbbell lunges.

MUSCLES TARGETED: quadriceps, gluteals, hamstrings

STARTING POSITION

Stand with feet flat and placed less than shoulder width with toes pointed slightly outward.
Hold a dumbbell in each hand with the hands facing inwards.

EXERCISE TECHNIQUE

Step forward, keeping the back straight.
Bend the knee of the lead leg until it reaches a 90 degree angle. The knee of your back leg should be roughly two or three inches off the ground at this point.
Push forcefully with your lead leg and return to the starting position.
Repeat the exercise with your other leg and continue to alternate until you reach the intended number of repetitions.
You should note that varying the length of the step will change the emphasis of this exercise. A longer step will place greater emphasis on the hamstring and gluteal muscles. A shorter step will place greater emphasis on the quadriceps muscles.

When you do not work your body as a whole throughout the week, you are prone to injuries due to an overall muscle imbalance.

3.Mirror, Mirror – Your eyes are beautiful and nothing is in your teeth, but most important, the mirrors in the gym are for insuring correct posture during exercise and not for aesthetic reasons. On the flipside, do not feel cocky for staring at yourself while exercising. It is imperative that you make sure your posture is correct during your training sessions. Common errors in posture include knees jutting beyond ankles when in squat or lunge positions, shoulders shrugged (even the slightest bit) while performing upper body exercises as well as butt not tucked or stomach not tightened. You can do a lot of research on the Internet. Don’t limit yourself to the private courses because some of the public courses are very well maintained. After all, if your travel hundreds of miles for your vacation, I’m sure you will want to “try out” a number of courses while you are there.
