The city of Boyne City is working with The Brook Retirement Communities to plan an independent/assisted living facility in town.
The facility, which would be a combination of assisted living and independent living, would consist of 42 units with the possibility of 20 additional units in the future.
Back in October the city planning committee was approached by representatives from The Brook indicating that they wanted to develop an independent/assisted living facility in the city, said Scott McPherson, Boyne City planning/zoning director.
The Brook Retirement Communities already have facilities in six cities in Michigan, but selected Boyne City for expansion because of its success as a city.
One reason we picked Boyne City is because you are very progressive and it looks like your community is doing quite well in these tough economic times, said Jim Dewitt, owner and operator of The Brook.
Since October, The Brook has been working out some of the details of how the facility will work in Boyne City, but they have run into some challenges along the way.
One of the challenges that they found was that they needed to find a parcel large enough; they had to find a parcel close enough to water and sewer and they needed to find a parcel that was appropriately zoned, McPherson said.
They found a 10 acre parcel of land at 701 Vogel Street, but it isn’t currently zoned appropriately for the intended use and will require changes to make it work.
The Brookretirement property hopes to break ground in Boyne City as soon as possible after all the details are worked out.
