Of course we all have friends who think their child is an complete saint, or a genius or the future president of the United States. Bragging and parenting go hand-in-hand. May the party invitee who is bursting with pride get the prize! In the Pride Sin Station, have a brag-off. All parents, aunts, uncles, etc. can take part. The object of the game is to see who has the most pride in their youngsters. The parent who carries the most photos of her child in his wallet to your celebration is the winner. Bonus if she carries around his child’s report card or crayon drawing!

You can never go wrong with the conventional pumpkin-carving contest. Get people excited for the contest by supplying a prize for the winning carver. Head to the pumpin farm and gather a lot of great pumpkins that are perfect for carving. Give friends paints, carving utensils, markers, felt and other decorative crafting items from your area craft store to create their pumpkin. Then choose three people to judge the winning pumpkin. Give the winner a prize, and display the winning pumpkin as your centerpiece at your party.

Meet Michael Chow – Poker pro from HawaiiComments Off

Talk about lucky. Michael Chow, a poker pro from Honolulu, Hawaii, won $237,463 and his first World Series of Poker gold bracelet in the $1,500 buy-in Omaha High-Low Split tournament (Event #4) on the day of his 33rd birthday early on Wednesday morning. Chow is believed to be only the second Hawaiian in WSOP history to win a gold bracelet. Lisa Hamilton, who won the Ladies World Championship in 2009, is believed to be the first. “There are a lot of very good poker online players who come out of Hawaii,” said Chow, according to a newspaper report. “There are a lot of games back home. Many people come to Las Vegas from Hawaii. Maybe more people will come and play poker now (after I won).” Chow, who previously worked in real estate before playing online poker full-time, now concentrates mostly on high-stakes cash games in his native Hawaii and in casinos in both Las Vegas and Los Angeles. Chow previously had about $300,000 in live tournament winnings. He is now up over half a million in earnings. Chow defeated longtime tournament veteran Dan Heimiller in heads-up play. Chow dominated most of play on Day Three, but lost his chip lead late against Heimiller, a Las Vegas pro who won a WSOP bracelet in 2002 in a Seven Card Stud event. When heads-up play began, Heimiller enjoyed a 2-to-1 chip advantage over Chow. He increased his lead to about 5-to-1 at one point. But Chow stormed back during the last 90 minutes for the victory. Congrats to Chow.

StagnationComments Off

In poker online games, chip stacks are a lot like a pet-you need to feed it and take care of it, or it will diminish and eventually die. I’ve spent many poker online tournaments wondering what the heck happened to my stack, when after a dry period I’ve found that the towers in front of me have turned into a few weak piles of small-denominational chips. Turns out, folding hand after hand isn’t the best way to keep your stack strong-it’s just a good way to blind out and go just about insane with boredom in the process.

A chip stack is never stagnant; it’s either always shrinking or always growing. If you don’t keep feeding it more chips, you’re going to lose it to the blinds or to your more ambitious opponents. Even if you’re not getting the cards that you want, you’ve got to find a way to keep adding to your pile. There’s nothing wrong with taking a few hands of, but eventually you’ll have to start buying up some pots to bolster your stack. It won’t always work, but if you do it judiciously, you’ll be able to keep your stack alive in spite of the circumstances. Regardless of what the cards are saying, make sure that your stack finds a way to grow, otherwise, it’ll waste away to nothing in your next poker online tournament.

A Motivational IM Conversation about Poker Part OneComments Off

Me: I want to play poker soon

John: oh you forgot how frustration feels

Me: I just want to try my luck again maybe I wont still be on my 15 month cold streak though I don’t count on it John: you play cash games though right? not tourneys

Me: I like poker online tourneys too but live in town I play cash games

John: well cash games are more math based in my opinion no level increase etc. my only advice which you’ve heard before is play the players not the cards remember who you are playing with and at what stakes adjust your game people won’t appreciate the game of chess when they are playing chutes and ladders and their K 7 causes you to hit a chute on the river

Me: yeah the game I play with

Me: you usually have to have the hand because they are all rich and will call with any pair or draw

John: haha I’m somewhat offended by that

Me: they just don’t care if they have a piece, they want you to prove you can beat them and have lots of $$ so if you cant make hands, you don’t win

John: well that’s good I suppose if you are patient

Me: I can be patient especially when I haven’t played poker in a long time

Deep Stack vs. Short StackComments Off

There are clearly many differences between playing with deep stacks in poker, and playing a short stack. With the short stack, the amount of utility you have per dollar is much lower, causing you to push harder with strong hands earlier on, hoping to either gain small increments or to double up, building back toward a normal sized stack. With deep stacks, however, early decisions have a much more prospecting kind of weight. Each opening poker hand, rather than being an all or nothing decision, is an investment, speculation, looking for high returns on your initial claim. With deep stacks you want to be looking for hands that make huge hands, ones that you can use to pry the most chips from your opponent. With short stacks, it’s about the right place and time, and the right hand. Deep stack poker also represent much more potential damage when you make a wrong decision. You don’t want to put too much of your stack at risk without solid ground, but at the same time there is the leeway that a long shot can turn into the nuts and pay you deeply. Either way, both conditions have different poises, the short one based more on numbers and spots, the deep one based more on value and implied odds.

Top Five Signs It’s Time to Get up from the TableComments Off

1. You are playing too many poker hands If you find yourself steam raising with hands that normally you’d fold or maybe try to limp with, firing bets when you miss the flop and are getting picked off because people know you are trying too hard, it’s time to get up from the table.

2. You are misreading your online poker hand Every now and then we’ll look at our cards and mistake what’s there, it’s normal every now and then, in the space of a session. But when you see that you’ve done that more than once or twice in a whole session, either from being tired, or drinking, or too long in one place, come back when you can see straight.

3. You are blindly aggressing Aggression is the best way to win a pot, short of making the nuts, but it must be timed and aimed aggression. Firing blindly at hand after hand because you are steaming, angry over a bad beat, means that you’ve gotten off center, and need to reconsider your stance. Unaimed aggression will get picked up on by better players, and used against you, unto your loss.

4. When all else fails, defer to Rounders: “If you can’t spot the sucker at the table, you are the sucker.” Remember these four things when you play poker online.

Trap AttackComments Off

poker online players love to set traps and ensnare a victim that keeps feeding more online poker chips into the pot because they are “pot committed.” A trap play entices other players into the pot with small value bets. Basically, a player who has a big hand, most likely the nuts, such as flopping a full house, is going to slow play the hand to trap. Generally, a trap only works when another player has a hand too or is on a good draw. There is a saying in poker that goes, “The best hand is only as valuable as the second best hand” because that is the player who will contribute to the pot. Often poker players holding the second best hand, perhaps the flop brought a card to make trips or two pairs, become blind to the fact that they might be up against a better hand. This is how players get trapped. Always study the board texture to ascertain what is the best hand possible, and how does your hand stand in relation to that. Analyze your opponent’s actions to understand if you are facing the better hand. When holding the second best hand possible and facing a value bet, a re-raise will get you the information you need. If called or re-raised, your second best hand is probably beat. Don’t fall victim to the trap because your strong hand is vulnerable to a better one.
