Many moons ago, before PCs had graphical abilities, text based MMORPGs were being run on university networks over extremely slow dial-up connections. Best known as multi user dungeons (MUDs), many of these text-based web games have been altered for play over the web using a MUD client, or most recently, a modern web browser.
A poor web connection has very little impact on playability, and can also handle a huge volume of users, often referred to as Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game (MMORPG). This is largely due to the fact that most text-based rpg games have little or no graphics.
Another advantage to text based web games is the ability to play them on, pretty much, any computer connected to the Internet, due to their low system requirements compared to graphical games. Gamers are now playing them on modern handheld gadgets and modern cellphones.
Every text based MMORPG worth its salt will have the power to create an in-game character, increase their status, equipment, weaponary, trade items etc, and complete tasks in the game. Over the last 5 years, the landscape has changed and with so much competition, expectations are generally higher and building a successful text-based RPG demands time, effort and constant feature updates. The best text RPGs are hugely addictive and retain loyal players for months, and sometimes, years.
Facebook, the social media giant, observed the appeal in text based games and launched Mafia Wars, Farmville and Frontierville, produced by Zynga. Butler When trying to create the appearance of a poker monster hand while you are actually bluffing, sometimes you have to give some rope rather than just fire out all the time.
